Founded in 1882, Billings, Montana was named for Frederick H. Billings, former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad company that put Billings on the map. The city was nicknamed “Magic City” due to its rapid growth at the time. That growth has continued for the last century, and even today, Billings continues to be the largest city in Montana, but it is also the most rapidly growing city in the state.
Billings is located in the scenic Yellowstone valley, a canyon carved by the Yellowstone River in a process spanning the last 80 million years. The Yellowstone River carving through sandstone also created the Billings Rimrocks, a rock formation that surrounds the city of Billings and provides great opportunities for hiking and rock-climbing. The distinctly formed rock formations make Billings a uniquely beautiful place to live, with sights unlike anywhere else in the world.
As a large and rapidly growing city, Billings has many opportunities for recreation. The downtown boasts countless opportunities for shopping and dining. Within 100 miles of the city are attractions such as Pompey’s Pillar, Pictograph Cave, Chief Plenty Coups State Park, Zoo Montana, Yellowstone Art Museum, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Red Lodge Mountain Resort, Beartooth Highway, and Yellowstone National Park.
